Mrs. Jennifer Hayes, SHS Principal; Dr. Cawood Cornelius, SHS Library Media Specialist; Mrs. Crystal Avery, SHS Library Media Paraprofessional.

Dr. Cawood Cornelius has been selected as the 2018 Gordon County Schools Library Media Specialist of the Year by unanimous vote of his peers. Dr. Cornelius is an advocate for the Gordon County School Library programs and the importance of having a certified Library Media Specialist in every school. He is passionate about how essential the library media program continues to be as part of the overall educational process. Dr. Cornelius began his career in Gordon County at Sonoraville East Middle School (SEMS) where he was an integral part of the one of the academic teams. While there, SEMS was recognized as a National School of Excellence and Blue-Ribbon School. In 1999, he was named one of the Library Media Specialists at Gordon Central High School. During his time at GCHS, he, Sue Gable and Christi Gallman were recognized as the 2004 Georgia Exemplary High School Library Media Program. He served as the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA) president and the Georgia Council of Media Organizations (GaCOMO) conference chair in 2005. Dr. Cornelius received his Library Media National Board certification in 2004 and renewed it in 2014. He was named the GCHS Teacher of the Year for 2004-2005 school year and was among the three finalists for the Gordon County Schools Teacher of the Year. In 2005, he opened the Sonoraville High School (SHS) Library Media Center and has been there ever since. He was the recipient of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Innovation Award Recipient in 2008. He served on the Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers selection committee from 2010 to 2013. This school year (2017-2018) Dr. Cornelius implemented Phoenix Fire Teen Tech week each semester. He works with each English class to introduce students to the SHS Library’s digital resources and online research databases. The Reading Bowl Team he has coached for twelve years achieved 3rd place at last year’s North Georgia Region competition. He serves on the SHS Leadership Team and chairs the SHS Instructional Technology/ Media committee. He has been an integral part of the Gordon County 1:1 iPad initiative. Dr. Cornelius has been fortunate to be able to observe the Japanese and New Zealand educational systems in his role as Library Media Specialist, but he truly believes that the Phoenix Nation has one of the best educational programs. Dr. Cornelius is currently serving as one of the GLMA District One Region Chairs. He is also serving as the Chair for the GLMA committee gathering information on the state of Georgia School Library Media Programs and their staffing and funding levels. Dr. Cornelius would like to recognize his Library Media Paraprofessional, Mrs. Crystal Avery for her support during the years of transition at SHS from 9th - 12th, to 8th -12th and then back to 9th -12th. They have established a thriving library media program with active media centers in two buildings that serve around 1,100 students and over 100 faculty/staff. The two media centers have evolved from grade specific to subject specific areas for learning. He wants to emphasize the importance of the school library media program led by certified Library Media Specialists, so every student and teacher will continue to have access to quality materials and research instruction. Dr. Cornelius is proud to be recognized as the 2018 Gordon County Schools Library Media Specialist of the Year.
