PACTE teaching certificate program

Hello, my name is Christy Smith. The 2018-2019 school year will be my seventh year of instructing the amazing healthcare pathway at Sonoraville High School. I am also the advisor for the HOSA Club, a student led organization, which focuses on current healthcare principles/trends and community service.  I attended the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta, Ga., where I received a Bachelor's of Science in Dental Hygiene. I have over 20 years of clinical experience as a registered dental hygienist. I attained a masters in leadership from Shorter University, located in Rome, Georgia, and completed the PACTE teaching certification from the University of Georgia.

I have lived in Summerville, Ga. for 20+ years and grew up in the metro Atlanta area. I am married to my husband Scott and have two daughters, Aubrey (18) and Rachel (15). This fall, Aubrey will be a Junior at the University of West Georgia for Speech Pathology. Rachel will be a Sophmore at Sonoraville High School and plays Volleyball and Golf. I have three adorable boston terriers (Roscoe, Minnie May and Mr. Milo) and they are my BABIES!. I enjoy spending time with my family and pets. I also love working in my yard and have tons of flowers in my garden. I have attended West Rome Baptist Church in Rome, Ga for over 15 years.

My objective in teaching the healthcare pathway at SHS is to allow students to have a up close look at the vast and lucrative career opportunities within the healthcare realm. Today, more than ever, one must choose a career that offers abundant job placement opportunities as well as an income that will be suitable for today's rocky economy. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Healthcare is the largest industry, showing the highest amount of growth of any other field." BLS reports, " 14 million were employed by the healthcare industry in 2006 and at least 9.8 million more healthcare jobs will be added by 2024.

Students are given the opportunity to learn about healthcare concepts, technology, and patient care skills, within the health care pathway, in hopes of helping them identify potential future careers in this dynamic industry. The three courses that I instruct are as follows:

Introduction to Health Sciences: Level 1 course

This course will enable students to receive initial exposure to the many Healthcare Science Careers as well as employability, communication, and technology skills necessary in the healthcare industry. The concepts of human growth and development, interaction with patients and family members, health, wellness, and preventative care are evaluated, as well as the legal, ethical responsibilities of today's healthcare provider.  Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated including microbiology, basic life support and first aid. This course will provide students with a competitive edge to the better candidate for either entry into the healthcare global market place and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training.

Essentials of Healthcare: Level 2 course (Students that pass this course will also receive an Anatomy 4th Science Credit)

This course is primarily an anatomy course addressing the physiology of each body system, along with the investigation of common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases. The prevention of disease, diagnosis and treatment, that could be utilized, are addressed along with medical terminology related to each system. This course provides an opportunity to demonstrate technical skills that enforce the goal of helping students make connections between medical procedures and the pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. Students must pass Introduction to Healthcare before they can enroll in this course. All students that pass this course will also receive an anatomy credit towards their 4th science on their student transcripts per the Georgia Departmant of Education. Students will recieve both an elective class credit as well as a core class credit, which will count towards their HOPE Core GPA.

Allied Health and Medicine: Level 3 course

This course is designed to offer students the opportunity to become effective and efficient, mult-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of various allied health opportunities. Students focusing on a career path in the healthcare field may apply classroom/lab knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as they participate in direct or simulated client care. Student will build a personal notebook/portfolio which will include their current resume, community service learning experiences, a reflection end of pathway essay and completion of medical skill check offs for technical skill competencies mastered in a medical lab setting.

End of Pathway Exam

A national cumulative board exam shall be administered to all students that complete all three levels of the healthcare pathway. This National level exam/board will access how much information the student as attained throughout the completion of this pathway. Sonoraville High School's End of Pathway Exam scores consistently rank above the national averages (National 55% passed Vs. SHS 70-75% passed). Student's that pass this exam have the opportunity to showcase this achievement on their college applications and personal resumes.
