My name is Heather Roberts and I teach 12th grade Economics and 11th grade U.S. History.  I reside in Red Bud with my husband and daughter.  I have been married to Andy Roberts for 21 years and we have one daughter, Hannah, a senior at SHS.  I am originally from Trion, Georgia but moved to Calhoun after beginning my career at Gordon Central.

In my spare time, I enjoy traveling with my family.  We have visited 49 out of the 50 states.  Each summer, we add to our state count and will complete visiting all 50 states in 2018.

This is my 24th year of teaching.  I have served in numerous roles during my career including instructional supervisor, lead teacher and even assistant principal.  I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher.  I have always enjoyed working with children, especially teenagers.  In 2014, I was chosen to be Teacher of the Year for SHS by my peers and was a top-three finalist for Gordon County Teacher of the Year.   I also currently serve as the majorette coach at SHS.

As a teacher, you are many things to your children.  You are a mother, counselor, leader, listener and a role-model and each one is equally important.  They look up to you, depend on you and watch how you handle every situation.  They see when you are calm under pressure.  They see when you are flexible with an unexpected event at school.    They see your patience with the child that works slower than most.  They see your knowledge of the subject you teach.  They appreciate the new activity that allows them to be creative.  They see your charisma as you teach.  They see your passion.  They feel your infectious energy.

What do I want from my chosen profession?  It's not about the money or this recognition, it's about the letter from a student that has been in my desk drawer since September 6, 2006 from PVT Jeremy Brake.

 Dear Ms. Roberts,

"How is GC without me?  I'm in basic training right now getting in shape and yelled at.  I was writing just to say thanks for putting up with me last year and going out of your way to help me succeed.  Without you and my teachers care and support, I would have never made it in school.  So, thank you for saving my life.  I miss GC and forever will but keep helping and caring and thank you again."

So, why do I teach?  That's why.
